Hand Feeding the Router With Baltic Birch Plywood

How do you hand feed a router with Baltic Birch Plywood? This is largley a matter of developing a "feel" for how the router performs-the sound of the motor, and the quality of finish on the cut material. YOu want to maintain a constant "chipload" on the router bit. One key factor is to avoid always stopping in the middle of a cut.


At 20,000 rpm, the cutting face of the carbide will easily burnishes the edge of the material, creating extreme amounts of heat, and hence the burning, if you have some knowledge of woodworking

 I would suggest "climb cutting" the material on the first pass- moving the router in the same direction as the direction of rotation of the router bit. This can be an unnerving experience at first, as the the router wants to run away on you -and from your control. Try it on a piece of scrap first. The advantage to doing this is that the bit pushes all the waster material behind it as it cuts, keeping the cutting edge clear of waste, and does not go right through the material as it does when conventional cutting. Climb cutting is frequently done on CNC gear and when using power feeders. It offers much better finish on solid woods, where it is used most often

Downside Negatives of Using Baltic Birch Plywood

On the downside of using Baltic birch is that the toplayer can come off under certain circumstances. Glue doesn't realy soak in because it can't get by the glue layer in between. So to make the strongest glue-connections, you can enlarge the surface area or cut the panels under an angle of 45 degrees. It's not completely neccesary because as soon as the cabinet is completed it will have much more strenght. But if you aim for the best construction just keep it in mind.

Benefit of the cutting under 45 degrees (in the woodshop) is that you can make the cabinet in just a few hours while using nothing but glue and clamps. When using screws into the sides of the panels you should pre-drill the holes with an drill 1 or 2 mm smaller (as with MDF).

Grade A Wood (Different Grades of Plywood)

Well Grade A Wood Simply is premium face grade wood which is usually used for excluve finishes on high-end millwork, cabinetry and finishes for interior home decor. It is also found on architectural panelling for inteior design and well made and expensive furniture.

An example of a high end - grade a wood would be Mahagony wood, as well as Oak Wood.

Rules Regarding the Grading of Wood Products:


The decorative panel makers within the United States and Canada will offer unique grades, the consensus grading standard is ANSI/HPVA HP-1-2004, American National Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood. This document establishes unique characteristics for each species of wood veneer in face grades of AA, A, B, C, D & E and in back grades of 1, 2, 3 & 4. This standard also provides standards for core grades and adhesives, and is a valuable resource for anyone buying or specifying decorative wood panels


Mahogany Wood - Products

Mahogany Woods is different from many different kinds of tropical hardwood, most of which are reddish-brown wood that is widely used in furniture-making, boat building, and other high specification uses. It is also used in the wood panelling for plywood.

Luan Wood- which can be discribed as a tropical type of plywood from the South American and Asian Regions actually began manufacturing began over 40 years ago in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. In the Home Renovation and Construction Industry, plywood in general from a select few tropical countries such as Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia is classified as Luan Plywood.

The species of wood which is used is from the Phillippines and the traditional name is Lauan, however it is commonly called Luan Plywood. It can also go by the name Meranti, or also

Philippine Mahogany. (Also Tropical by Nature)



Ash Plywood - Also

Used for applications where a very strong & resilient, decorative plywood is required, ash throughout plywood is a high-quality panels product and is regularly used for toy & model making, interior decoration & in the manufacture of a variety of sports equipment. This product is generally produced using uniform 2.5mm thickness rotary peeled ash veneers throughouts.

Fir Wood



Oriented Strand Board

Sterling board (UK and Ireland) and by the proprietary eponym Aspenite in Canada and the Americas. It is also an engineered wood particle board made by layering strands of wood in specific orientations. In appearance, it may have a rough and variegated surface with the individual strips of around 2.5 x 15 cm / 1 x 6 inch, lying unevenly across each other


WBP Plywood

WBP plywood is so called because it is Weather and Boil Proof. During manufacture this product plywood is constructed with weather resistant adhesives which allow it to endure maximum humidity levels. It is often used for outside construction projects by do-it-yourselfers for decking furniture and landscaping. It is also useful for exterior protection on small frame structures such as sheds, and garages. It will require a coat of paint or a varnishing to bring it to full protective values and strength.

MDF Plywood : Description

What is MDF Plywood? Well I'll give you a brief description of it's background here. MDF Plywood is actually an acronym for Medium Density Fibreboard. It is a specially engineered product which is created when hardwood or softwood is broken down into fibers and then combined with wax in a resin. This then forms panels (plywood) by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF Plywood is actually denser than regular plywood, but can be used in the same applications or those that might call for greater strength than run of the mill plywood

Birch Plywood Boarding is constructed with more veneers per unit of thickness than other types of plywood. It is actually constructed in Europe using interior grade adhesives, this panel is ideal for routering, scroll sawing or for applications requiring high stability. Plywood sheets made from Birch are usually produced in a 60" x 60" size.

How to Screw and Stain Baltic Birch Plywood

How do You  Screw Baltic Birch?

To fasten and secure your baltic birch plywood I would recommend Pre-drilling your screws to the root diamter or there abouts. It makes it easier to drive them in. Baltic Birch is much more stiff than MDF Plywood so that is a plus when building boxes. As for cutting figure out the best feed rate by listening to your machine and watching the end product of the cut. You know what both of them should look like. And you know what an un laboured router sounds like. Other than that there is not much to know about. The outer layer of the birch ply is about 1mm so don'r worry about sanding through to easily.

Finishing Baltic Birch Plywood ?


Finishing can be tough as birch does not stain evenly. But with a coat of shellac it will take an even stain.

Baltic Birch versus MDF Plywood

Comparision between Baltic Birch and MDF Plywood

Birch plywood is much harder and denser than MDF. That usually means slower cutting. It also means screws do NOT strip as easily. Birch plywood is of course made of layers. The outer layers are quite thin and it is possible to sand right through it before realizing it. If you intend to paint it or veneer it that might not be too much of a problem but if you want to finish the birch be very careful. Baltic Birch dust also does't not seem to have the same order as MDF which can be quite strong at times.

If you have a variable speed router you will probably find that slowing it down a bit and cutting more slowly causes fewer burn marks. If you can use a fine toothed blade in your table saw. Also tearout isn't a huge problem with birch ply but if you can put a piece of scrap under it while cutting on the table saw. If finishing the birch itself you may find you like the look of having the edges rounded over.

What are some of the advantages of MDF Veneer Plywood?

MDF Vaneer plywood is that is dense, flat, and usually has no knots, and can be easily worked into your do it at home projects. This is the reason why, because it is made up of fine particles it does not have the same surface type as a grain based plywood board. MDF can also be painted with regular finishes to give it a more realistic wood like look, as well as making it smoother for other hardwood applications. MDF has no grain, which means it can be worked harder than average type plywood, in situations such as cutting, drilling, maching, and filing all without damaging the surface. MDF Plywood Veneer can also be dowelled together and using traditional woodwork joints can even be cut. MDF is also glueable, and can be glued with PVA type wood glue. If you wish to paint MDF plywood veneer, you can use oil or water based paints, varnishes to improve the look, in addition to using veneers and laminates.

The difference between Baltic Birch from from a lumber yard and Birch from home depot is that baltic birch is 5 layers of birch while birch is 3 layers with a filler wood.

You have to determine the type of job you are doing and how long you expect it to last, and how much you want to invest not only in the current job, but any future jobs down the line which may involve removing the flooring at a later date.
